BRIC in partnership with NYC Votes (New York City Campaign Finance Board) presents: Know Your Voting Rights, A #BHeard Town Hall that will center voting accessibility and examine how democracy is compromised when voting access is limited.
Voting rights and access have been largely assumed as part of US citizenship but the ability for all citizens to vote has been in question in recent years. Since the Supreme Court struck down part of the Voting Rights Act in 2013 we’ve seen a number of state level voting restrictions being implemented throughout the country and here in New York City, we’ve seen bureaucratic failures such as the unintentional purge of over 200,000 voters by the NYC Board of Elections. Voting can be a confusing and intimidating process for anyone unfamiliar with the system or who encounters any difficulty along the way, especially for those ill equipped with the time, knowledge and resources needed to navigate the system. How are we measuring up in providing our most vulnerable citizens with access to the ballot?

In this #BHeard Town Hall, we will curate an panel of experts including activists, advocates, academics and artists for a timely discussion about voting access and equity for traditionally disenfranchised groups such as voters who are disabled, unhoused, monolingual (other than English), are in jail but not convicted, formerly incarcerated and those unable or can’t afford to leave work to vote. This forum will support voters by offering resources and information on how to advocate for themselves.This event will feature ASL interpretation.Spanish subtitles will be available shortly following the live broadcast.

Conozca sus derechos electorales | Un Ayuntamiento #BHeard

Realizado a través de Zoom y transmisión a través de BRIC TV y YouTube y transmisión en vivo en español tanto para transmisión como en línea. Los derechos y el acceso al voto a menudo se consideran partes clave de la ciudadanía estadounidense pero, en los últimos años, la capacidad de todos los ciudadanos para votar se ha cuestionado. Desde que la Corte Suprema recortó parte de las leyes de derecho electoral en 2013, hemos visto una serie de restricciones estatales implementadas en todo el país. En la ciudad de Nueva York, se han visto repetidos fracasos burocráticos, como la purga involuntaria de más de 200,000 votantes por parte de la Junta Electoral.
Votar puede ser un proceso confuso e intimidante para cualquier persona que no esté familiarizado con el sistema. Es más, es especialmente complicado para aquellos que no cuentan con el tiempo, el conocimiento y los recursos necesarios para navegar por el sistema. ¿Cómo estamos a la altura de las expectativas para brindar a nuestros ciudadanos más vulnerables acceso a la boleta electoral?
BRIC, en asociación con NYC Votes (Junta de Financiamiento de Campañas de la Ciudad de Nueva York), presenta: Conozca Sus Derechos Electorales, un ayuntamiento #BHeard que centrará la accesibilidad al voto y examinará cómo se daña la democracia cuando el acceso al voto es limitado. En este Ayuntamiento #BHeard, estamos seleccionando un panel de expertos que incluye activistas, defensores legales, académicos y artistas para una discusión oportuna sobre el acceso al voto y la equidad para grupos tradicionalmente marginados: votantes discapacitados, sin vivienda, monolingües sin habla inglesa, encarcelados pero sin condena, anteriormente encarcelados y aquellos que no pueden o no pueden permitirse dejar el trabajo para votar.
